Strategic Consulting

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. We can help inoculate your organization from potential threats through a combination of threat assessment, research, training, and proactive crisis planning.


We offer a two-hour training module: What You Need to Know About Information Warfare. The training was developed with progressive organizations in mind. It includes upfront curriculum, a group breakout activity, and an individual threat assessment worksheet. Melissa has done versions of this training for the AFL-CIO, Campaigns and Elections’ Art of the Campaign Conference, Friends of the Earth, Mozfest (Mozilla Foundation), Netroots Nation, MisinfoCon, March for Truth, and the Columbia School of Journalism.

We’re also able to combine this module with a training module on digital security (in combination with a partner organization) for a full day workshop on digital Resilience. And of course, we’re happy to work with you on a custom training to meet your needs.

CARD Strategies’ Melissa Ryan is an experienced trainer with extensive experience training digital organizers, communicators, and leadership in the progressive movement. She’s also developed a roster of affiliate trainers who can offer these modules pending availability.


Melissa regularly speaks at conferences, universities, progressive groups, and select corporate settings. Recent engagements include The NY Daily News Innovation Lab, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The American Constitution Society, and Pepperdine University.


We’re available to write and help produce reports on extremism and online toxicity for internal stakeholders, funders, boards and/or the general public. Recently Melissa co-authored a report on Disinformation and the Environmental Movement for a coalition of Environmental groups led by Friends of the Earth.


Looking for a feature article or commentary on extremism or online toxicity? Melissa was one of the first writers covering the beat. She founded and edits Ctrl Alt-Right Delete, a weekly newsletter in partnership with HOPE not hate, that reaches more than 15,000 readers. She’s also written for outlets like Buzzfeed News, Refinery29, The Progressive, and NowThis.

General Digital Strategy

We’ll occasionally take on a client for limited engagements to provide guidance on digital mobilization, outreach, and/or fundraising but in all honesty, we have to really love the campaign. Examples of what we’d consider: labor and organizing (especially unionizing tech and media workers), campaigns pressuring tech companies, and innovative local campaigns.
